What is Gum Disease?

Gum disease is a bacterial infection that causes inflammation of the tissues that support the teeth. It is most often caused by poor oral hygiene habits, allowing bacteria to accumulate between the teeth and at their junction with the gums.

Gum disease can lead to oral health problems such as inflammation, bleeding gums, gum recession, pockets where excess bacteria can accumulate and, eventually, bone loss.

Treatment of Gum Disease

Treatment methods depend on the type and severity of the disease. Our dentists will work with you to create a treatment plan.

Once your periodontal treatment is complete, you'll be advised to come in regularly for dental check-ups and preventive therapy, usually four times a year.

  • Preventive Gum Therapy

If the disease is detected in its early stages, preventive treatment is recommended. Regular dental cleanings and check-ups are important to maintain the health of your gums.

If you have a good oral hygiene routine at home and a balanced diet, you can significantly reduce your risk of gum disease.

  • Non-Surgical Gum Therapy

For patients with mild gum disease, a thorough cleaning by a dental hygienist may be sufficient.

The dental hygienist will remove plaque and tartar from around and under the gums through thorough cleaning, and smooth rough areas through a process called scaling and root planing.

  • Surgical Gum Therapy

For patients with more advanced forms of gum disease, surgical treatment may be necessary.

There are different types of surgical gum therapy, such as gum grafting and bone grafting.

Cosmetic Gum treatment

If you have gums that sit low on the tooth or an insufficient amount of gum tissue, you may need gum surgery. This cosmetic dental procedure can help restore a normal balance to the appearance of the teeth and thus help change the aesthetic appearance of a smile.

Dental Implants

Periodontics involves placing dental implants under the gums to replace missing teeth. This procedure can offer several oral health benefits.
